Carl’s time in Weatherfield has never been without problems. He started a relationship with Abi Webster while she was still married to his brother Kevin Webster. Abi struggled with her feelings, but problems in her marriage made her vulnerable to Carl’s attention. What Abi didn’t know back then was that Carl was already involved elsewhere.
He had slept with Tracy Barlow, who quickly realised she wasn’t the one he truly wanted. Tracy later caught Carl and Abi together and threatened to expose them. She makes it clear that Carl was already living a double life.
Away from his messy love life, Carl was also crossing serious lines at work. He had been tampering with the accounts at sister Debbie Webster’s hotels, using her young-onset dementia diagnosis to gain access to the finances and cover his tracks.
Ryan Follows The Money As Abi Learns About James
Carl’s financial behaviour doesn’t stay unnoticed for long. Ryan Connor receives a tip-off from Chariot Square employee Rafael and starts looking into the hotel accounts. Acting as manager, Ryan spots figures that don’t add up and knows something isn’t right. With Debbie Webster getting ready for her wedding, Ryan decides not to rush into anything without clear proof.
He keeps digging through the accounts, determined to understand exactly what’s been going on. At the same time, Abi uncovers a betrayal she never saw coming. She finds out that Carl has been cheating on her again; this time with James Bailey. The discovery leaves Abi devastated and angry, especially after everything she has already put on the line for Carl.
Carl remains focused on dealing with his mum’s death. He’s completely unaware that both his fraud and his affairs are starting to come into the open. Abi, meanwhile, starts thinking about what comes next. Realising that Carl has lied repeatedly, she begins planning how to deal with him and the damage he’s caused.
