Bernie Winter has been fragile ever since losing Billy Mayhew. She tried to drown her grief in alcohol after the funeral, pushing Dev Alahan away and ending up on a reckless night out that brought Mal Roper into her life.
The sleazy newcomer aggressively pursued her, and although she rejected him, he supplied pills and convinced her to take them with him. Bernie later woke in a strange hotel room horrified at how close she had come to betraying Dev and swore she would forget the whole thing.
But she couldn’t escape him. Roy Cropper unknowingly hired Mal as an electrician, the furious husband of his pen-pal Alice, leaving Bernie trapped face-to-face with her mistake. Mal promised he would leave after the job, yet instead he lingered in Weatherfield and kept hovering around her.
