Steve McDonald is about to face one of the most complicated goodbyes of his life in Coronation Street. As he prepares to attend the funeral of his father Jim McDonald, the emotional day doesn’t unfold the way he might have expected. Instead of standing beside close family members, Steve finds himself heading into the painful moment alone.

Steve Faces Jim’s Funeral Without Key Family Members

Jim McDonald, played by Charles Lawson, recently died after developing pneumonia following a stay in hospital. The character had long been known for his troubled history in Weatherfield. Jim’s storylines over the years often involved violence, criminal activity, and alcoholism.

Steve first learned that his dad’s health had taken a serious turn after discovering that Jim had listed him as a guarantor on a rented property. The arrangement quickly became Steve’s problem when the landlord demanded the money Jim owed. With Jim lying in hospital at the time, the responsibility fell squarely on Steve’s shoulders.

CS/ Steve in trouble

Things became even more serious when one of Jim’s old army friends confirmed that Jim didn’t have long left to live. Steve had little desire to see his father again, but he realized the opportunity might never come back if he stayed away. Faced with that reality, Steve reluctantly prepared himself to say goodbye.

When the time for the funeral arrives next week, Steve makes plans to bring along his new friend Ben Driscoll for support. Steve openly admits he could use some moral support on such a difficult day. However, Tim Metcalfe isn’t thrilled with the idea and points out that he actually knew Jim personally, while Ben did not.

Ben Steps In As Secrets Linger Around Steve

The day of the funeral becomes even more emotional when Steve discovers that neither his mum Liz nor his brother Andy will attend. Both of them cut ties with Jim long ago and have no intention of revisiting that chapter of their lives, leaving Steve to face the day without them.

Thankfully, Steve isn’t completely alone. Jim’s former army friends Declan and Davey turn up to pay their respects, and they soon begin sharing stories about their time with Jim.

CS/ Steve bonds with Ben

Nearby, Maggie Driscoll listens carefully to the conversation unfolding around her son Ben. Clearly uneasy, Maggie quickly steps in and tries to pull Ben away from the group. She reminds him that he has a hospital appointment early the next morning and suggests it might be time to leave.

But Maggie’s concern about the appointment isn’t really the issue. In truth, she is far more worried about the growing friendship between Ben and Steve. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers.
