We recently reported that Coronation Street writer, Jonathan Harvey, has stepped down from his position after a two-decade run on the soap. The award-winning writer has to date penned as many as 331 scripts for the popular ITV soap since his arrival in 2004. In a recent social media message, Jonathan revealed that his latest script for the soap was the episode that featured Paul Foreman’s funeral.
When Jonathan Harvey first joined Coronation Street, he worked on Todd Grimshaw’s coming-out story. “My last episode of Corrie is on tonight – Paul’s funeral. Jan McVerry’s written the first half and me the second. Sure it’ll all be plain sailing and everyone’ll get on and it’ll all be lovely,” he announced.
It is being reported that Jonathan stepped away from the soap to be able to accommodate a much-needed extended break for himself. Previously, he has worked on Kathy Burke’s vehicle Gimme Gimme Gimme, and the play Beautiful Thing which was adapted for the screen in 1996. His more recent works include – Here You Come Again, a new musical using the music of Dolly Parton. It is set to debut in Salford’s Lowry Theatre at the end of the month.
Harvey recently appeared on I Love Manchester to promote the upcoming production. During the chat, he was asked if he would consider returning to the soap. “If they’ll have me!” he responded in jest. However, he then admitted that “I’m planning on returning next year. I felt after twenty years it was time for a break. I honestly only thought I’d stay for a year or two, but I blinked my eyes and twenty years had passed.”
