Kelly Monaco leaving General Hospital was a tough pill to swallow for fans and harder for Steve Burton (Jason Morgan). After all, the man was Sam McCall’s longtime on-screen partner. Steve wouldn’t have faced it well had a fellow co-star not supported him in getting through those teary scenes. Check out Burton’s whole scoop on saying goodbye to his one and only Sam or Kelly.
Steve Didn’t Have A “Clear Vision”
Monaco’s character was engaged to Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) when her storyline concluded on General Hospital. But that couldn’t overshadow the rich history and chemistry Jason and Sam once shared. Do you guys agree? Subsequently, Burton struggled to capture the deep bond as he filmed his last scenes with Sam.
“I was really at a loss in the sense of I wasn’t sure how to play this,” he shared. Both Kelly and Steve have been working together for so long that the latter didn’t have a “clear vision” for the scenes. So, who came to Burton’s rescue? The legendary Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) stepped in to lend some wisdom. He advised Steve to go with the flow. His mantra?
Benard says, “Whatever happens in there is supposed to happen.” Moreover, he encouraged Steve not to force anything because sometimes the best scenes are those that feel natural and impromptu. Maurice’s advice sat well with him. It helped Burton capture the heavy emotions needed for Jason’s tearful goodbye at Sam’s bedside.
Interestingly, Steve had to shoot this emotional sequence before filming earlier moments when Sam was still alive. How did the Jason Morgan actor feel about it? While movie actors always do it, “It’s not your favorite thing to do,” says Burton. In addition, he felt surreal to go back and forth in such a raw and gripping storyline. Meanwhile, Kelly’s exit came with its own twist.
