“We sort of talked about marriage in a kind of way,” Maureen explained. While returning from Edinburgh on a train, David mentioned the Jewish holiday Tu B’Av, a day when women could propose to men. Taking the opportunity, Maureen slipped under the table and popped the question. “It was just for a gag, really,” she said, laughing. David’s answer? A resounding yes.

The highlight? Helen walked into the farewell party wearing a T-shirt listing all of Gail’s former husbands: Brian Tilsley, Martin Platt, Richard Hillman, Joe McIntyre, and Michael Rodwell.
