Coronation Street has fans have slammed the producers for the portrayal of one storyline. One of the famous charities that deals with kidney transplant patients has expressed disappointment regarding Carla’s kidney transplant storyline. What is the issue there? Find out.
Charity Disappointed Over Storyline Portrayal
Kidney Care UK is disappointed regarding the portrayal of Carla’s storyline in the ITV soap and has called it “detrimental.” The character, Carla, is shown to have been diagnosed with sepsis and now needs a kidney transplant.
Initially, the family was shown scrambling for a donor—but thanks to her nephew Bobby Crawford, Carla’s brother Rob has agreed to donate her a kidney. And this is where the problem lies, according to the charity.
Kidney Care UK has been helping people with kidney disease for a long time now—and has highly criticised the dramatic deviations from the reality of the medical world. As the show bosses previously worked with the charity in 2018 to ensure storyline accuracy, the main advice they shared during the 2024 consultation was not implemented. Back in 2018, the charity had already raised concerns about the unrealistic timelines in the kidney transplant plot.
Will Coronation Street Change the Plot?
The main question looming is how Carla could find a donor within a week. Fiona Loud, the charity’s Policy Director, further shared that the minimum time required for someone to undergo a kidney transplant is at least 2 to 3 years.
She further shared that the show had a great opportunity to raise awareness, but they clearly downplayed it. Though the charity has tried reaching out to the show bosses and urging them to revise the storyline, there has been no reciprocation yet.
Elsewhere, on the show, Carla is surprised to know that it’s going to cost £100,000 to get the procedure done. As she decides to step back, Betsy offers her half of the amount from her inheritance. Carla is now undergoing dialysis at home. Whether or not the bosses take the charity’s concerns into account will be interesting to watch.
