Coronation Street fans were stunned as the Platt family home rose in flames in last week’s episode. But what the viewers didn’t see was the filming chaos that came with it behind the scenes. Pulling off such a significant fire sequence was not easy—and the production team had meticulously planned the shoot to ensure the stunt looked as authentic as possible. However, the unpredictable weather conditions only added to the challenges.
Unpredictable Weather Throws Coronation Street Filming Into Chaos
Actors Jack P. Shepherd and Ben Price recently discussed all the cases on their podcast “On the Sofa” where the ambitious fire sequence was nearly derailed by severe weather conditions. They revealed that the original plan was to film overnight to capture the dramatic fire effects, but the extreme weather conditions meant that filming had to be pushed back multiple times.
Jack recalled, “We were meant to be filming until 4 am. My call time was 11 p.m. Then they said, ‘No, everyone’s going home at 9 because the snow was so bad.’” Ben added that the fire scene was initially scheduled over four nights but had to be cut short due to the delays. “And then the inside was done on a completely different day,” Ben explained how they had to work around the disruption. The fire was part of a major storyline involving the gangster Harvey Gaskell. It was his men who set No. 8 ablaze after David took his money. As the flames kept spreading, Nick rushed to save Toyah, who was unconscious in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Shona and Max searched for Lily. But things took a frightening turn when Shona made it out and revealed Max was still inside. Moments later, the house exploded, leaving David in shock. However, Max’s body was later pulled out from the wreckage once the rescue team came in. Despite all the filming challenges, the scene came together. And we would love to see such explosive scenes again on Coronation Street. But until that happens, check out the other soap news on Soap Opera Daily.
