Coronation Street viewers know that it‘s been a long and rocky road in the romance for Todd Grimshaw. We have seen him endure heartbreaks and fleeting affairs over the years, ever appearing one step away from discovering something substantial. But now a new plot suggests that Todd‘s fortunes may be set to shift with a very surprising spark.
Some Unexpected Chemistry In Cobbles
According to actor Gareth Pierce, who plays Todd Grimshaw, it’s a plot turn when his character has a close brush with a scaffolding pole. This clumsy encounter causes Todd to meet Theo, a scaffolder laboring- or possibly having a business- on the street. The mishap almost strikes Julie, but Theo misconstrues the situation, believing Julie pretends to be injured to become sympathetic. George quickly corrects him, explaining Julie is terminally ill, not exaggerating her condition.
Todd then stumbles into George and Theo in the middle of an argument, setting the stage for a series of volatile encounters between the two men. Gareth characterized Theo as “muscular, handsome, and a fairly alpha sort of guy.” He said Todd is immediately physically attracted to him-even if he can‘t always distinguish between a builder and a scaffolder.
There’s a touch of traditional Corrie humour thrown in as Theo attempts to make amends for his previous error by purchasing flowers. “There‘s banter and some humour there that indicates a degree of connection,” Gareth explained but said that at this stage, Todd has no idea if Theo is even gay.
From there, Todd begins to sense mixed signals. Gareth mentioned that what starts as innocent back-and-forth exchanges begins to sound flirtatious. “Todd‘s attempting to figure out, ‘Am I seeing something here or not?'” he said. Sometimes, it feels like there‘s that spark. Until Theo suddenly changes the subject or leans into the usual “bloke“ repartee, leaving Todd wondering if it‘s actual chemistry or mere friendliness.
Coronation Street: Gaydar Alert, Awkward Exit, and a Twist on the App
Further adding to the amusement, Julie becomes involved in a bit of matchmaking, arranging the two on a date. And on this date, Gareth joked that “Todd’s gaydar is bleeping.” But just as things appear to be heading somewhere, Todd describes the night as a date, and Theo abruptly exits. Disheartened, Todd returns to the world of dating apps, apparently resigned that nothing will result from the encounter. That is until he sees Theo’s profile appearing on his screen. Was Theo interested the whole time?
Gareth discussed Todd’s mental state, sharing that he’s tired of meaningless app hookups and one-night stands. “He’s a bit done with the apps and the worthless hookups. And really, he is seeking, I think, something a bit more permanent.”
Though the app verifies a degree of physical attraction, Gareth explained what gets Todd even more pumped. It’s that their connection began in the real world-with real humor, chemistry, and an actual human connection. “That is quite exciting,” he said. The show’s producer has already hinted at Todd’s love life this year-and now seems to be the perfect timing. What do you think?
