Coronation Street actor Channique Sterling-Brown has spoken out about what the future holds for her character Dee-Dee Bailey, whose world was turned upside down after a traumatic childbirth ordeal. The ITV soap is addressing an uncompromising storyline that highlights racial inequalities in maternity care, one which has resonated so powerfully with viewers.
Coronation Street: Dee-Dee’s World Turns Upside Down
Dee-Dee, having just given birth to a baby girl, was treated appallingly at the hospital. Doctors ignored her pleas, resulting in a severe haemorrhage and an emergency hysterectomy.
While recovering, she wonders to herself, was this below-standard care racially motivated? Speaking before her stint on the Off Script podcast, Channique revealed that Dee-Dee is traumatized and seeking explanations.
She outlined that Dee-Dee is always planful, but has seen carefully constructed life plans go awry in the past year. The character is currently grappling with regaining her sense of agency and adjusting to what’s occurred.
Sterling-Brown said that Dee-Dee isn’t only concerned with her own healing but desires to ensure that no other woman has to experience what she did. This desire for justice defines the path of her emotional journey. She continued that Dee-Dee’s battle isn’t only personal—it’s a broader mission to combat systemic injustices and ask for more.
Hope, Healing, and Conversations That Matter
Channique voiced optimism that the narrative will bring much-needed awareness and change, especially regarding the experience of Black women in maternity care. While the narrative focuses on a Black woman’s experience, the end result is better care for all. In her opinion, concentrating on the disparities can have positive implications for everyone. “When we take care of one of us, we take care of all of us,” she stated.
Responding to the reaction from fans, Channique acknowledged she’s “blown away” by the amount of support. She admitted she’d originally felt anxious, aware of the seriousness and intricacy of the plot. As somebody who has never given birth herself, she was keen to play the part with respect and honesty, particularly as a salute to mums and the stretched NHS.
Channique’s View On the Storyline
Most importantly, Channique was aware of the fine line between paying tribute to NHS staff while continuing to tackle the institutional problems that disproportionately harm Black women. She credited many mothers and medical professionals who reached out to speak about their experiences or provide insight. Even medical professionals admitted they were actively trying to unlearn embedded prejudices—something she considered inspiring.
For Channique, the most fulfilling aspect has been seeing actual conversations arise out of the narrative. She indicated that the crew was hoping people would stop, think, and talk—and by all accounts, that’s what’s occurring. She finished by stating she’s really happy with how the story is going now.
