Big secrets are about to be unearthed in Weatherfield, and one character’s past is finally coming into focus. As Coronation Street gears up for a highly anticipated flashback episode, the casting of a new character promises to bring emotional depth and long-awaited answers about a fan-favourite detective’s troubled beginnings.
Kit’s Past Set to Take Centre Stage
Audiences already realize that DS Kit Green has some deep emotional baggage, especially in regards to his past relationship with his biological mother Bernie Winter and old friend Mick. And the show is finally going to get into his past now.
Coronation Street will transport the clock back 17 years in a one-off episode that looks at Kit’s youth. The show will look at the messy relationships between Kit, his then-best friend Mick, and Bernie—who, as viewers are aware, wasn’t the one who brought him up.
Jacob Roberts, who plays Kit, arrived in the soap in May 2024 and teased that this instalment will introduce sides of Kit that even intense viewers haven’t yet witnessed. Roberts says that Kit’s past wasn’t actually squeaky clean, and that it’s something he’d sooner keep in the ground.
He said Kit and Mick were close friends at 16, so there’s loyalty there—along with a dash of fear about old secrets coming to light. “It’s like having friends from your past you never want to meet,” Roberts said. “You don’t want those tales getting around.”
Joanna Hudson-Fox Joins Coronation Street
ITV has announced that actress Joanna Hudson-Fox will star in the special flashback episode, as Kit’s adoptive mum Amanda. She is most famously known for her nine-year stint as a doctor on Emmerdale from 2018 until 2024, and she is familiar with soap scandals—and her character in Corrie will be an important one.
A Sun report uncovered that Amanda will have a “key role” in revealing Kit’s history.
Bernie is his biological mom, but Amanda was the one who raised him—and this new dynamic will provide viewers with vital background on why Kit is who he is.
Hudson-Fox’s brief appearance is set to be restricted to this special episode. Her own connection to the world of the soap—she’s married to ex-Emmerdale actor Liam Fox—makes this casting even more thrilling for veteran ITV viewers.
The Emotional Weight Behind Kit and Bernie’s Bond
As the series approaches, Jacob Roberts also discusses the way in which Kit’s dynamic with Bernie is gradually changing. Although Kit isn’t completely at ease with Bernie becoming a mother figure, he’s beginning to lower his defenses.
Kit’s still fiercely loyal to Mick for all his toughness. But he’s tormented by a version of himself that he’s attempted to abandon. This plot is emerging as one of the most complex and emotional of the year.
