Having had his stint as David Platt on Coronation Street for more than 20 years, Jack P Shepherd is well aware of on-screen haircuts. However, in a recent interview on his On The Sofa podcast, Jack shared a behind-the-scenes close call that would have ended in one very real—and very unwanted—hair change.
Two Decades of Pretend Haircuts… With Real Scissors
Jack told us that David did not begin using the scissors until he was 17, so he‘s now been cutting hair, at least on camera, for 20 years. Amazingly, he told us, scissors used in scenes are actual scissors. The hair and makeup crew just give their own equipment over to Jack, who then uses it in scenes.
He explained how he typically goes behind the individual, grasps a section of their hair between his fingers, and simulates cutting all the way through. “I almost, almost hit the hair,” he confessed. In spite of the near-misses, he‘s never really made a blunder himself, but he couldn‘t say the same of one of his co-stars.
Coronation Street: Samia‘s Close Call with Kate Ford‘s Fringe
Jack uncovered that Maria Windass actress Samia Longchambon nearly shaved Kate Ford‘s fringe off in real life. On set, Samia apparently got the entire fringe caught between her fingers and almost cut it off with the scissors.
Kate ended the take immediately and yelled, “Samia, Samia, wait! What are you doing?!”—bringing the situation to an abrupt halt before anything disastrous happened.
From the Salon to the Spotlight
Jack‘s real–life triumph has also been in the spotlight. He just emerged the winner of Celebrity Big Brother 2025, outpacing runners-up Chris Hughes, Chesney Hawkes, Donna Preston, JoJo Siwa, and Danny Beard.
Following his victory, Jack stated he was “blown away“ and hadn‘t even hoped for the outcome at all. He thought he could finish fifth at best, but with each called name, he couldn‘t fathom being acontender still. He felt that people might have thought he was difficult to read initially, but that people’s views changed over time—and obviously enough, the public came around to him.
