Prince William knew that Kate Middleton was the one for him even before proposing to her. However, he had to like the idea of settling down. Though they broke up in 2007, they went to the island of Desroches, where they rekindled their romance. This revelation was found in an article by Marie Claire on Sunday. The article mentioned Katie Nicholl’s book, The Making of Royal Romance, which focuses on Kate, William and Harry.
Nicholl wrote that William that if he wanted to win Kate he had to give her some form of guarantee. Though it wasn’t easy for William, who was fearful about his future, Nicholl revealed that the couple made a pact during their getaway. A close friend confessed to Nicholl that the couple didn’t agree to marry there. William told Kate that he wasn’t ready to marry but promised her his commitment. The Princess of Wales agreed.

The Prince and Princess of Wales met in 2001 while studying at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. They dated for 10 years before announcing their engagement in November 2010. Later, William talked about his proposal while they were on a trip to Kenya with friends. He shared in an interview that it takes motivation to plan such a moment, but it felt right in Africa. Prince William gave Kate Middleton a special ring that once belonged to Princess Diana, who died in 1997.
He added that his mother can’t be around to share the fun and excitement, so this was his way of keeping her close. The couple married at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011. They have three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Meanwhile, last year Kate was diagnosed with cancer, but she announced in January 2025 about her remission.
