It is because he had taken the blame for Okie’s murder to protect his son, Harry Mitchell. He didn’t want to do so, but wasn’t left with other option. If he hadn’t taken the blame, then Harry would have collapsed, and his world would have shattered.
Harry had spent months being trapped and tortured by Okie. And to protect him from another setback, he placed his fingerprints on the knife.
