Colby Natasha Nixon has been winning hearts as Kat Richardson on Beyond the Gates, but her recent visit back home wasn’t just about memories. The actress returned to Richmond with a deeply personal mission that connects to her own health journey and aims to help others facing the same struggle.
A Powerful Reason Behind Her Return to Richmond
Colby Natasha Nixon, known for her role in Beyond the Gates, recently went back to her hometown of Richmond during National Kidney Month. This was not just a casual visit. She came back to raise awareness about chronic illness, especially lupus nephritis, a condition she has been living with.
On the show, Nixon plays Katherine “Kat” Richardson in a story set in a wealthy gated community in Maryland. The series follows four generations of the Dupree family and focuses on showing Black success and strong family bonds.

Off-screen, Nixon has been using her voice to talk about kidney health. She shared that when she was first diagnosed, she looked for people who were doing well despite having the same illness, so she could keep going. Now, she wants to do the same for others. She said it is important for her to “be a light for other people” who are going through this.
Her Honest Message About Lupus Nephritis
Nixon also spoke openly about how this illness affects certain groups more than others. She pointed out that Black women are three times more likely to have lupus or kidney disease, which makes awareness even more important.
She explained that among Black, Asian, and Latina women with lupus, about 60% can develop lupus nephritis. Because of this, she urged people to take their health seriously and not ignore symptoms. Regular check-ups, she said, can help catch problems early.

Talking about her own journey, Nixon shared how important it is to have good doctors. She said her medical team has helped her stay healthy so she can continue working and living her life. She encouraged others by saying, “Just make sure you’re going to the doctor consistently,” because that support can make a real difference.
She shared that she feels very grateful for where she is today, but she knows it all began in Richmond. She said she would not be where she is now without the training and start she got there. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Beyond the Gates spoilers.
