Dee-Dee Bailey has been trying her best to keep it together following a series of personal misfortunes in Coronation Street. Just when she appeared to be getting on with her life, a jaw-dropping experience outside the bistro will toss her life into disarray once again, and it all connects back to a choice she believed she’d long since left behind.
Dee-Dee’s Toughest Chapter Yet
Life has not exactly been kind to Dee-Dee of late. Having recently learned she was pregnant with her former fiancé Joel Deering’s child, a man who broke her apart with his evil personality, she had wrestled with the psychological burden of being pregnant with his child.
Yet she made the tough decision to continue with the pregnancy, aware that her baby might be the life-saving donor match for Lauren Bolton’s son, Frankie.
But nothing was easy about the journey. Dee-Dee’s traumatic labor resulted in a hysterectomy, destroying any hope for future children. Added to that was the racism she experienced while in maternity care, which ignited her continued struggle to advocate for improved midwifery education and care.
Baby Laila was destined to be adopted all along. The little one was supposed to be raised by Dee-Dee’s brother James and his boyfriend Danny. But when the couple couldn’t immediately take the baby to their home, the Baileys took over on a temporary basis. Although she was heart-torn, she instructed James to take Laila and depart for the States. Goodbye wasn’t easy to say, but she rationalized it was for the best.
Coronation Street: Dee-Dee’s Past Isn’t Done Yet
Flash forward to the current day, and Dee-Dee is working herself to the bone and engaging in activism. She’s adamant about making her suffering serve a purpose, advocating for more equitable maternity care and working on a new custody case. When she tells this to her father Ed, he becomes worried the case would be a bit too personal.
Soon, she assures Daniel that abandoning Laila was the correct choice, and she’s sticking to it, despite her family evidently believing otherwise. They’re not certain she’s really at peace and fear she may someday regret what she’s done. But any delicate sense of control Dee-Dee has established is soon shattered.
In future scenes, Dee-Dee and Daniel leave the bistro, just to witness a taxi arriving. And out she walks is James, holding baby Laila in his arms. Instantly, all the feelings Dee-Dee went to great lengths to suppress, flood back. Why is James back in Weatherfield already? And why is he bringing Laila back with him?
