Shelley King has finally opened up about quitting Coronation Street, leaving fans in tears following her last episodes. The fan-favorite actress, who played Yasmeen Metcalfe for more than a decade, departed Weatherfield with an emotional goodbye. Though her character‘s exit is the end of an era, King has promised viewers this could not be a final farewell.
Coronation Street Star’s Memorable Farewell
King’s exit from the ITV soap was announced earlier this year, as her last episode was broadcast on March 10. In the soap, Yasmeen departed Weatherfield for a new career in London, which brought an end to her long-standing appearance on the street. Regarding the episode, the actress took to the official soap’s Instagram page to discuss her exit.
She said, “Hello, everybody, Yasmeen here, although I’m also known as Shelley King. Yasmeen has been my name for the last 10-and-a-half years in this glorious street – I’ve been so privileged to be living in number six. I’ve had the most wonderful time. I’m very sad to be leaving. I just felt I’d have to try going back to the stage, trying to refresh Yasmeen.
She added, “As you know, Yas and I are very close. She’s going to do other things. “She will not say ‘goodbye’. She will say, as the French say: ‘à bientôt,’ which means ‘see you soon.’ Somewhere, somehow.” King’s video undoubtedly struck a chord with the fans, and they soon chimed in to fill the comment section with good wishes. Some were sad to see her go, but others complimented her for bringing Yasmeen to life all these years.
Sydney Martin, Betsy Swain‘s actress on the soap, said, “Love you, Shelley ❤” while Alexandra Mardell, her former co-star who played Emma Brooker, replied with three love heart emojis. King concluded her speech by recognizing the show‘s influence and suggesting a return in the future. Whether she does or doesn’t return to Weatherfield is debatable, and only the upcoming Coronation Street updates can reveal the rest. Until then, stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more soap updates.
