Christina Boyd has always been a handful on Coronation Street, but Amy Robbins has now explained why the character is starting to change. After years of putting up walls, Christina is slowly letting people see a different side of her, and it’s all tied to her growing bond with George Shuttleworth. Still, while she might seem more settled these days, Amy has hinted there’s plenty of drama waiting in the wings.
Why Christina Isn’t Just a “Hot Mess”
When Christina first turned up in Weatherfield, her loud outfits and even louder opinions made her impossible to ignore. As a result, she quickly earned a reputation as a wild card. In fact, Amy herself admits she didn’t think she’d be asked back after Christina’s early behaviour caused so much chaos.

However, Amy has now revealed that there’s more to her character than meets the eye. Christina’s fiery streak, she explained, comes from years of being mistreated and having to toughen up to survive. Because of that, her sharp tongue and quick temper were really just ways of protecting herself. Now, though, things are beginning to shift. Meeting George has allowed Christina to lower her guard in ways she never could before, giving fans the chance to see her softer, more vulnerable side.
George Brings Out a Different Side
Naturally, this change has been noticed most in Christina’s romance with George, played by Tony Maudsley. Their growing closeness has brought warmth and tenderness into her story, which has surprised viewers who only knew her as a source of chaos. Even so, Amy is clear that Christina hasn’t lost her spark entirely. “She’s still a hot mess and brilliant fun,” the actress explained.

What makes her so enjoyable to play, Amy added, is that she can be both fiery and fragile at the same time. For soap fans, this balance keeps Christina unpredictable. She may be opening her heart more, but there’s always the risk that her old habits could resurface and that’s exactly what makes her story compelling.
Coronation Street: On-Screen Love, Off-Screen Friendship
Part of the reason Christina and George’s relationship feels so genuine on screen is down to real life. Amy and Tony Maudsley have been friends for over 25 years, after first working together on My Beautiful Son alongside Julie Walters. Because of this long-standing friendship, their chemistry on Corrie comes across naturally.

As Amy explained, having that bond makes the storyline even more special. It also means fans get to see Christina in a new light, one that suggests she could finally be capable of lasting love. Whether that lasts, of course, remains to be seen. While Amy might be a newer face in Coronation Street, she’s no stranger to soapland. Over the years, she’s appeared in EastEnders, Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks.
Looking back on her career, Amy has done it all, from Shakespeare to the West End, from films to TV dramas. Yet for her, Coronation Street has always been the dream. “I’ve done the West End, I’ve made films. But what I really wanted was to be in Coronation Street,” she admitted. “Now that I am, if I never worked again, I’d still be happy.” Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for Coronation Street updates!
