Roy Cropper finds himself caught in the middle of a deeply unsettling situation in Coronation Street after a stranger he trusted begins to show a far darker side. As Bernie Winter-Alahan grows increasingly frightened, Roy unknowingly pushes the danger closer to home and her desperate warning forces him to question whether he has made a terrible mistake.
A Friendly Face Hides A Troubling Past
Bernie’s nightmare traces back to a reckless night born from grief. Still mourning Billy Mayhew’s tragic death so soon after losing her son Paul to MND, she drowned her emotions in alcohol and ended up in a hotel room with a man named Mal.
At the time, he appeared to be another broken soul seeking comfort. But viewers already knew Mal wasn’t harmless. Earlier, he stormed into Roy’s café, accused Roy of trying to steal his wife, and punched him.

His wife had been writing letters to Roy, and Mal blamed him anyway. That same heartbreak drove Mal to the hotel where he met Bernie. They drank together, and he attempted to kiss her, but she firmly told him she was happily married.
Bernie returned home guilt-ridden to Dev, only to discover a horrifying coincidence; Roy had hired Mal to fix the café’s electrics. Suddenly, the stranger she wanted to forget became a regular presence at her workplace. Mal insisted he would leave her alone and soon disappear, yet the opposite happened.
Mal’s Behaviour Turns Frightening in Coronation Street
The situation escalated when Mal invited Bernie upstairs to Roy’s flat for “some time alone,” making her increasingly uneasy. Matters grew worse when Dev and Asha went away for a short father-daughter trip and Roy stepped out to the bank, leaving Bernie alone in the café.
Mal locked the door and confessed he had feelings for her. She rejected him again, but his behaviour changed from awkward to threatening, leaving her terrified.

Jane Hazlegrove explained that Bernie was really quite frightened and that dealing with an aggressive man again made the situation genuinely dangerous. Her fears intensified when she discovered someone had cut her head out of her wedding photograph. Convinced Mal had broken into her house, she no longer felt safe even in her own home. The next day she confronted him with the damaged photo and accused him directly. Mal denied everything, but Bernie warned she would go to the police if he didn’t leave Weatherfield.
While Bernie sees the danger clearly, Roy remains unaware. To him, Mal appears to be a decent man who has simply fallen on hard times. So when Tracy mentions Ken is searching for a reliable electrician, Roy happily recommends Mal. Now the question is, will Roy listen before it’s too late, or will his trust place Bernie in even greater danger? Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers.
