If you watch Coronation Street regularly and follow the show or its cast online, there’s something important you should know. A new scam is targeting fans who don’t see it coming.
Fans Were Tricked by Fake Actor Accounts
A few months ago, both Corrie and Emmerdale warned fans after people pretended to be actors from the shows on social media. These scammers messaged fans, claiming to be the stars and even asking for money for messages or meetups.
The shows explained that some fake messages looked very real, even using deepfake videos that made it seem like the actor was speaking. However, it wasn’t them. The message from ITV was clear. No Coronation Street or Emmerdale cast member will ever contact fans like that, especially not to ask for money.
They reminded everyone that if you want to meet a cast member, do so through official ‘meet and greet’ events run by ITV Star Tours. Anything outside of that should be treated with caution and reported to the platform it came from.
Now, scammers are pretending to be from Corrie’s casting team. This time, it’s not the actors being impersonated, it’s the Coronation Street casting department. Fans reported receiving messages from accounts claiming to offer them a role on the show. Sounds exciting, right? But it’s not real.
The Coronation Street Team Has Posted Another Warning
They said they’re aware of fake accounts claiming to be part of the casting team. Just to be clear, casting at Coronation Street never happens through DMs or random messages online. They stressed that their casting team only uses official channels to contact people. So, if you get a message out of the blue offering you a role or asking for personal details, ignore it and report it.
Emmerdale star Lisa Riley has also recently spoken out about something similar. She posted a video on her verified Instagram, warning fans not to believe posts or videos that look like they come from her but aren’t. She explained that AI is being used to create fake content that seems to come from her, but it’s completely made up. Lisa said if it’s not on her blue-ticked page, then it’s not real. She was really clear: “It’s a hoax, it’s a scam, and it’s a lie.”
So, if anything feels off, it probably is. Always check that you’re following verified accounts, and if something sounds too good to be true, it likely is. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for updates on your favorite soaps, both on and off screen. We’ll keep you in the loop.
