Coronation Street has seen many of its stars celebrated outside the cobbles, and this time Sue Devaney has been in the spotlight. A big Manchester event not only honoured her but also led to a meeting fans never expected.

A Special Pride Moment

Manchester Pride was full of colour and excitement last weekend, with awards given to people who have made a real difference to the community. Among the winners were Corrie’s Sue Devaney and Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies. They both received the Your Manchester Icon award, which celebrates major contributions to Greater Manchester and the LGBT community.

Sue, who plays Debbie Webster in Coronation Street, has enjoyed a long career on screen. Russell has become one of the UK’s best-known writers and showrunners. Although both have lived and worked in Manchester for years, they had never properly met before. That finally changed on Sunday when the Pride event brought them together.

Russell’s Big Praise for Sue

After the ceremony, Russell posted a selfie of himself and Sue on Instagram. He said he had admired her for 40 years and described her as “wonderful.” Russell explained that although they had moved in the same circles for years, this was the first time they actually met. He joked about their photo, saying they looked “insane” and as if they “could eat a car.”

Sue replied to Russell in the comments, saying it was “an absolute honour” to share the stage with him. She said she loved everything he stood for and was thrilled to finally hug him. She even joked about planning a date with him soon, writing, “You, me and the fridge!”

Coronation Street Co-Stars Show Their Love

Sue’s Coronation Street co-stars quickly joined in with their own messages of praise. Jane Danson, who plays Leanne Battersby, called Sue “sunshine in human form” and said she was adored by everyone. Jane added that she loved working with Sue and was glad she had finally met Russell.

Daniel Brocklebank, who plays Billy Mayhew, said he adored Sue and thought it was wonderful that she and Russell finally crossed paths. Cait Fitton, who plays Lauren Bolton, praised Sue as a “beauty inside and out” and said she always brings a smile to others.

Sally Carman-Duttine, who plays Abi Webster, called her co-star “Sunshine Sue,” while former Corrie actor Colson Smith, known for playing Craig Tinker, described her as “hilarious.” The Manchester Pride award became a chance to celebrate Sue’s legacy and bring two admired stars together at last. Russell’s admiration for Sue, along with the wave of support from her Corrie family, showed how deeply respected she is both on and off screen.
