The cobbles are saying goodbye to one of their most enduring faces, and now, the real reason behind that emotional exit has finally come to light. After five decades of unforgettable drama, Helen Worth has opened up about what truly pushed her to step away from Coronation Street and it’s far more personal than fans may have expected.
Helen Worth Reveals What Led To Her Coronation Street Exit
Helen Worth, who brought Gail Platt to life since 1974, remained at the heart of Coronation Street for decades, shaping some of the soap’s most unforgettable storylines. From Sarah’s teenage pregnancy to the chilling truth about Richard Hillman being a serial killer, her character lived through it all, making her a constant presence in Weatherfield.
Over the years, Worth appeared in nearly 4,000 episodes, becoming one of the most recognisable faces on the show.

However, during a recent appearance at An Evening with Helen Worth at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester, she finally shared why she chose to walk away.
The 75-year-old admitted that the role had started to wear her down physically and mentally. She explained that toward the end, she began to feel tired, saying it was only in the final stretch that exhaustion really set in. By the time she filmed her last scenes, Worth described herself as “rattling a bit”.
Actor Confesses The Demanding Reality Behind The Scenes
Gail Platt’s exit aired on Christmas Day 2024 brought the end of an era that spanned 50 years. While Worth described the first 49 years of her journey as “a dream,” she admitted that the workload in recent times had intensified significantly.

The hectic filming schedule played a major role in her decision. Scenes were often shot out of sequence, with actors jumping between completely different timelines in a single day. This added a layer of mental strain that made the job even more demanding.
Worth also explained that such disjointed filming schedules made it harder to focus on the character’s journey. Despite these challenges, she spoke warmly about her final days on set. She shared that he was incredibly kind and supportive, particularly at a time when she felt more vulnerable.
With her living nearby, she believes a return would fit perfectly into her life. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more behind-the-scenes updates from Coronation Street.
