A property once owned by a Coronation Street legend has now become the centre of a bitter local dispute. Julie Goodyear’s former £1.5million mansion in Heywood has sparked outrage among residents who believe the site could potentially be used to house illegal migrants.
The dramatic development has quickly turned the soap star’s once-beloved home into the focus of protests, planning disputes, and a heated community debate.
Julie Goodyear’s Former Mansion Becomes Focus Of Migrant Housing Fears
The controversy surrounds a luxury property that once belonged to Coronation Street icon Julie Goodyear. She is best known to fans for playing Bet Lynch on the ITV soap. The Heywood mansion remained in her ownership until 2024, when it was placed on the market.
Nearly 18 months after the property went up for sale, the house has now found itself at the centre of a planning row. According to The Sun, locals have become increasingly concerned about the work currently being carried out at the site. Even some were questioning whether it matches the planning permissions that were originally approved.
Tensions escalated after reports suggested that the property’s new owners want to convert the mansion into a house of multiple occupancy (HMO). That proposal has triggered fears among residents that the large property could ultimately be used to house illegal migrants.
Planning Changes Add To The Growing Controversy
The situation has become even more complicated due to several changes in the development proposals. In 2025, plans were first submitted to Rochdale Council for the site, but those proposals were later withdrawn. Soon after, a new idea emerged that suggested converting the mansion into a 15-bedroom bed-and-breakfast.
However, that proposal had not yet received approval when another planning application was submitted in 2026. The latest documents now reveal plans to transform the mansion into 10 two-bedroom apartments. There’s also a barn already located on the land that would be converted into a separate three-bedroom house.
Despite the planning process still being unresolved, reports claim construction work has already started at the property. This has further angered residents who believe development should not begin until official permission is granted. For now, the future of the former Coronation Street star’s mansion remains uncertain as planning decisions continue and local anger shows no sign of fading.
