It was bestowed upon him by co-star Claire Sweeney, who plays Cassie Plummer in the soap. She said she felt honored to act with Bill and was humbled to have a plotline with him.
Sweeney called Roache a legend and said he was part of the fabric of British television. She said it was a pleasure to watch and work with him and commended his professionalism, saying he never fluffed a line. Sweeney said he was always sharp and on the ball and always appeared to be one step ahead of the rest. She said he was a brilliant, nice, and generous man.

In accepting the award, Roache expressed his thanks for the honor. He described it as a massive honor and said he was grateful to have been given it. Looking back on his career, he said he had had a great ride and that working on a show as special as Coronation Street for so many years had been like magic. He continued that he had been lucky to work with some absolutely brilliant actors over the years and had accumulated a lifetime of memories.
