Maria and Gary’s come a long way in Coronation Street, establishing what appeared to be a good life together. But now, with secrets mounting, jealousy setting in, and a new woman on the scene, Maria’s beginning to notice cracks in their marriage, and things could be on the verge of getting into serious trouble.
Trust Issues Resurface
In the years that have passed, Maria has not been able to completely trust Gary, largely due to the complex history he shares with Sarah. As Samia Longchambon, the actress who portrays Maria, clarified, Maria remains convinced that Gary could still harbor feelings for his former partner. That nagging uncertainty has never really disappeared.
Things have escalated recently. Gary decided to purchase Mick’s van in secret and transferred the money to Lou to assist her. Not only did he not tell Maria, but he has also been hiding texts from Lou which is creating further suspicions for Maria.
Making it more galling is the background. Maria used to defend Gary when Mick attempted to strong-arm him into purchasing the builder’s yard. At the time, she jumped to his defense.
Nowadays, however, when she requires the same kind of loyalty, Gary’s backing is in another direction. For Maria, that’s a painful change to accept.
A Heated Clash in Coronation Street
As tensions reached a boil, it was only a question of time before matters came to a head. In the end, Maria’s discomfort with Lou boiled over into a physical fight, and the confrontation was concluded with Maria arrested for assault.
It was after weeks of emotional tension, with Gary playing dumb and still supporting Lou. The couple is now put through one of their biggest tests yet, Samia said. Samia said she doesn’t know if Maria and Gary will survive it, but she still hopes so.
Looking Back, and Looking Ahead
When asked who Maria’s true love was, Samia didn’t hesitate, she said Liam. Maria was deeply in love with him, even though he cheated with Carla. His murder left her devastated, and it’s a loss that’s stayed with her.
In comparison, her affection for Gary is more practical. “She does love Gary,” Samia said, “but more practically because of the family they’ve established together.” With Liam, there were butterflies. With Gary, it’s about routine and responsibility.
But with Gary holding secrets and placing someone else first, even that solid foundation begins to shake. If something doesn’t change soon, Maria might be tempted to question whether or not this relationship is still worth fighting for.
