Coronation Street viewers are in for a shock next week as there’s a new plot on the cobbles- one that’s sure to have them chattering. As familiar faces continue to experience love and heartbreak, a new pairing is set to shake things up. But there’s a twist – the actors already have a little history, and it’s not just Weatherfield.
A Corrie Couple With a Shared History
Gareth Pierce, Coronation Street’s Todd Grimshaw, will star in a new on-screen romance with a character named Theo Silverton. Theo, played by newcomer James Cartwright, will be introduced next week as a scaffolder on the street. While the characters meet for the first time, the actors have a history together.
Pierce recently confirmed that this is not his first time working with Cartwright. The two had previously worked together in The Archers, the BBC Radio 4 soap on air for decades. He remembered meeting Cartwright for the first time about 13 years ago when he played in a play written by Cartwright’s father. Cartwright was in the audience, and that was their first meeting.
Coronation Street: Bringing Chemistry to the Cobbles
Their careers again crossed just before the COVID-19 pandemic, at one of the final recording sessions of The Archers before lockdown restrictions brought everything to a grinding halt. Pierce explained that they were in the Birmingham studio when they were nervously waiting for Boris Johnson’s announcement, wondering what would happen next.
Having a preexisting relationship helped the two ease into their new Corrie roles. Pierce admitted that it was beneficial to know Cartwright beforehand, even if they hadn’t worked together much before. Because their previous work wasn’t in-depth, the on-screen relationship between Todd and Theo could build naturally without seeming too rehearsed.
With Theo Silverton’s debut, the wait won’t be long to discover how this on-ramp romance develops—and if the real-life chemistry between the actors carries over into the on-screen relationship.
