Carl and Abi’s relationship starts with a run-in at the Freshco car park, where Carl, oblivious to the fact that Abi is his sister-in-law, attempts to make a move with some cheeky flirting.

The tension continues until next week, when Debbie enlists the family for a wedding menu tasting at the Chariot Square Hotel. With promises of great food and a five-star spread, she invites everyone to be the guinea pigs for the high-society event.
But as soon as the party loosens up and has some fun, Kevin suddenly becomes ill and has to cut the event short. Only then, when they’re alone, Carl reveals himself to Abi in a moment of quiet vulnerability.
Carl’s Crisis Comes to Light
Carl confesses that his German business is on the verge of bankruptcy. The confession surprises Abi as Carl describes how a string of poor choices has resulted in absolute financial meltdown. As one Corrie insider explained, Carl is in complete despair, burdened by his failed plans and uncertain future.
He also admits that he’s conflicted. Even with his mess, he wants to remain in Weatherfield to care for his family, particularly now that Kevin’s health is in jeopardy. But Abi asserts that she still believes Carl being in town isn’t a good thing. She reminds him that Kevin would understand if he needed to return to Germany and sort out his life.
Then Carl confides in Kevin, who responds with dismay and alarm. Kevin wishes there was something he could do to alleviate Carl’s distress.
