However, Tony Maudsley has now assured viewers about his future on the show.
Tony Maudsley Confirms George’s Future on the Cobbles
Tony Maudsley who plays the character of George Shuttleworth has put the soap fans at ease and confirmed that he is staying on the show for now. He took to X to share the news, and revealed that he has signed on until at least summer 2026. He wrote, “That’s George serving (and burying) the good folk of Weatherfield till at least July 2026. Happy days!”
Many fans assumed George might leave alongside Eileen, but Maudsley’s update makes it clear that he will remain a part of Weatherfield’s future. While Eileen’s storyline is heading toward an exit, George will continue running his business.
Cleaver’s exit has been the talk of Corrie fans—many are wondering why she decided to leave after 25 years. Speaking on Loose Women, she shared that the decision was a deeply personal one. She said, “I’m now 61 and I feel I’m now at a stage in my life… like most mums we have responsibilities, we have other things we have to consider [and] we’re bringing up our families.”
Cleaver admitted that stepping away from the show will be emotional. She has built strong friendships on set and still has a close connection to the soap through her husband, who works as a lighting technician. However, she believes this is the right moment to step outside her comfort zone.
Eileen’s exit storyline remains under wraps—which has left the fans to speculate on how she’ll leave Weatherfield. The last time Cleaver took a break from the show, Eileen temporarily jetted off to Thailand to visit her son Jason. Whether this time will be a similar low-key departure or something more dramatic remains to be seen. It will be interesting to see in the upcoming Coronation Street spoilers how Eileen’s exit plot unfolds. Until then, stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more soap updates.
