The actor, known for his role of Dan Osbourne, bravely opens up about his worsening essential tremor and details its impact on his career and personal life. Read on to learn more!
Rob Mallard Opens Up About Challenges With Essential Tremor
Actor Rob Mallard has revealed a severe health challenge that could affect his career. Known for his role as Dan Osbourne, Rob has an essential tremor- a condition causing shaking that he noticed starting at just 14 years old. In a recent interview, Rob shared his worry that the tremor might shorten his time on the show.
He mentioned that the tremor has become significantly more noticeable over the last decade. If it worsens in his personal life, he anticipates it will be challenging and bothersome. Regarding his career, he expressed concerns that it could potentially ‘end his career.’
There have been suggestions to integrate the tremor into his character on Corrie. The soap star isn’t opposed to that but prefers not to do it now. He explained, “I don’t want it to pigeonhole me.” Recently, Rob shared his story on BBC One’s Morning Live. He talked about how the condition has affected him since he was young.
But after appearing on the show, the star revealed that he got hurtful comments online. He shared that he had longer hair styled in a quiff at the time. When he watched the replay, he noticed that all you could see was his hair shaking. Consequently, people on social media started speculating that he was drunk.
Since then, he had been concealing his condition because he feared it would hinder his career. However, not being forthcoming led to even more assumptions. Ultimately, he decided to come forward and reveal that it was an essential tremor.
Corrie Star Has A ‘Hand Double’
The soap actor shared how tricky it can be to film scenes where Daniel is texting or holding a drink. He mentioned that it’s really challenging because they need to keep it steady for around 10 seconds. He explained that he couldn’t keep his hand still for that long, so they used techniques like zooming in closely and letting him rest his hands on something while filming.
The ITV star added, “Once they even used someone else’s hand. I have a hand double – I’ve made it!” Mallard explained that now his tremor affects not only his hands but also his arms, neck, and sometimes his voice. Despite this, he’s figured out some tricks to manage it while filming scenes.
He explained that practising actions repeatedly and breaking them down into smaller parts has been very effective. The actor mentioned that when he needs to hold a pint, he prefers one that’s ‘two-thirds’ so it doesn’t spill. He explained that a fresh pint filled to the top raises his problems.
Regardless of everything, he has overcome his embarrassment and is actively collaborating with the National Tremor Foundation to increase awareness. Commendable! Isn’t it?!
