Behind-the-scenes action on Coronation Street provides all the stars in the show with plenty of keep-fit moments for the memory banks — and every now and again, the most surprising things arise from the folk you believe know you best of all.
Sam Aston, long-time Chesney Brown, had a revelation on one of Coronation Street’s most experienced members recently that some fans may be surprised to discover.
David Neilson’s Surprising On-Set Shenanigans
In a conversation on the Off Script podcast with ex-Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher and his wife, Liz, Aston provided some funny insights into working on the cobbles.
Talking on the podcast, Aston disclosed that David Neilson, who most notably plays Roy Cropper since 1995, is really different from the stern character that he depicts.
Aston indicated that Neilson possesses a very dry and sarcastic sense of humour, something that viewers would never imagine given Roy‘s normally reserved demeanor. He said that at times, it is hard to shoot scenes with Neilson because he tends to do something deliberately”daft“ just out of camera range.
He said it’s hard not to crack up while remaining in character. Aston also said that Neilson‘s mischievous behavior keeps everyone’s spirits up on set, even during dramatic scenes.
Chesney and Roy’s Emotional Bond in Coronation Street
While there is plenty of enjoyment off-screen, Aston also touched on the underlying bond between their characters throughout the years. He noted that Roy and his deceased wife Hayley, acted as surrogate parents to Chesney and his sister Fiz.
Aston remembered how Roy came in to help Chesney during a tough time. He even took him to karate classes and engaged him in other activities. He called those memories “brilliant,” indicating just how significant the relationship between their characters has been.
The recent Coronation Street scenes have witnessed Chesney facing fresh problems. It’s because his wife Gemma Winter-Brown has been threatened by their new neighbour, Mick Michaelis. Meanwhile, Roy has remained a mentor figure. This time to troubled teenager Lauren Bolton, particularly after he was recently cleared of suspicion in her murder trial.
As their characters face new challenges in Weatherfield, the spirit of friendship continues to shine through. We wish to see this bonding more both in front of the audience and behind the scenes. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more such Coronation Street updates!
