If you thought things had calmed down between Dee-Dee and James in Coronation Street, think again. The baby drama is far from over, and next week’s Corrie episodes are about to stir things up in a big way. Dee-Dee’s cooking up something behind James’s back, and it’s got disaster written all over it.
That Birth Changed Everything
It wasn’t that long ago when Dee-Dee gave birth to baby Laila in what turned out to be a really traumatic storyline. She had a rough time, serious complications during labour, an emergency hysterectomy, and the heartbreaking news that she wouldn’t be able to have more kids. It hit her hard.
After that, she made the difficult decision to let James raise Laila. He took the baby to the States, and while it was clear Dee-Dee was struggling with it, she let her go. But then James came back to Weatherfield last month, and the peace didn’t last long. Since his return, it’s been one disagreement after another between the two, especially when it comes to how Laila should be raised.
Dee-Dee Says One Thing, Does Another in Coronation Street
In next week’s episodes, Dee-Dee tells James and Ed that she’s grateful for the support she’s been getting from her church. That’s when James steps in and makes it clear that he doesn’t want religion to be a part of Laila’s upbringing. You’d think Dee-Dee would respect that. And to his face, she does.
But behind closed doors, she’s got other ideas. She goes to Billy and asks him to baptise Laila. Billy says he can’t do it without James’s permission. So Dee-Dee goes back to James, acts like she’s on board with his decision, and tells him she won’t push for a christening. But not long after, she pulls Alya aside and asks her to be Laila’s godmother. Alya sees right through it, Dee-Dee’s still planning the christening, just in secret.
This Won’t End Quietly
When James finds out what she’s up to (and come on, he will find out), it’s going to blow up. There’s already tension between them, and this sneaky move might be the thing that tips it all over the edge.
What makes it even harder to watch is knowing where Dee-Dee’s coming from. Channique Sterling-Brown, who plays her, admitted she was nervous about doing justice to such a big story. She said she really wanted to honour what mothers go through, and also how under pressure the NHS is.
She also mentioned how important it was to show how maternity care affects the Black community in particular, and how powerful it’s been seeing people connect with that. Still, none of that changes the fact that Dee-Dee’s crossing a line here. It’s going to be messy.
