Weatherfield prepares for Gail Rodwell’s departure after an impressive 50-year run. Initially, Sean Wilson was set to return as Martin Platt for her exit storyline, but he’s now stepped down due to personal reasons. However, another star will be making a comeback—not as Martin. He might just stir up some final drama with a potential romance involving Gail. But who is he? Keep scrolling to find out!
Who Is Replacing Martin Platt?
John Thomson is set to fill in for Sean Wilson in Gail Rodwell’s exit storyline. After 50 years, Helen Worth is leaving the soap. Sean (Martin Platt) was supposed to come back as Martin Platt, but he has stepped down from filming due to personal reasons, according to an ITV spokesperson.
With all of Wilson’s filmed scenes being tossed, guess what? The comedian and Cold Feet star is coming back as Jesse Chadwick. Thomson has portrayed double duty over the years—first as biker Gary in 1990 and then as kids’ entertainer Jesse from 2008 to 2010.
Viewers must remember Jesse’s failed romance with Eileen Grimshaw. Well, it looks like Jesse might get involved with Gail now, sparking one last hilarious clash with Eileen before Gail exits. But one thing has been confirmed: Gail isn’t getting killed off.
Executive producer Iain MacLeod stated, “Gail won’t die. It didn’t feel like killing her off would be right.” He mentioned that Gail’s exit is being crafted as a ‘brilliant storyline’ and reflected what the viewers would prefer to see. He highlighted the character’s challenging life, including her tough childhood and troubled marriages.
Hence, the show concluded that she deserved a happy ending, which is precisely what they are aiming to deliver. So, get ready for a new chapter and a memorable send-off in cobbles. I’m Sad to see that that Martin won’t be involved with Gail’s departure. That would have been perfect.
