In scenes set to air soon, Bernie begins struggling to breathe just as she’s about to say her vows. The collapse comes out of nowhere and brings the ceremony to a halt. But according to Jane Hazlegrove, who plays Bernie, there’s no need to expect the worst.
Speaking to My Weekly, Jane confirmed that the cause of Bernie’s collapse is an allergic reaction. It’s surely dramatic, but not life-threatening. That means the storyline won’t lead to any permanent exits, and Bernie will be able to recover.
Coronation Street: Jane Confirms Bernie’s Future
Jane went a step further and cleared up any speculation about Bernie’s future on the Street. She revealed that she’s just signed on for another year, which confirms that Bernie isn’t going anywhere. Reflecting on how it all started, Jane admitted she only joined Coronation Street for a short run at first.
“I only came into Coronation Street for 10 episodes to get a new bathroom,” she said. She laughed about being out of money at the time and accepting the role so she could pay for a white bathroom suite. Now, six years later, she’s still part of the cast and called it a “lovely place to work.”
Even though the wedding is disrupted, Jane’s comments make it clear that Bernie’s journey is far from over. The allergy scare throws off the big day, but with recovery on the cards and her contract renewed, Bernie will stay part of the action in Weatherfield.
