Actress Cheryl Murray is best known for playing Suzie Birchal on Coronation Street. She essayed the role for six years between 1977 and 1979, and again in 1983. Although the stint was rather short and too long ago, her remarkable performance ensured that fans remember her to date as Gail Potter’s best friend.
When Cheryl Murray left the soap, her character was sent off to London on-screen. Although her Coronation Street stint has been a very popular one, it is not the only feather in her hat. She even appeared in the music video for Morrissey’s hit song Everyday is Like Sunday. Cheryl gave some very memorable performances in rib ticklers- Hi-de-Hi! and Sorry.
In 2010, the Corrie star lent her support to The Sun’s campaign to Save the Rovers. Four years after that, she returned to her Corrie role for a special appearance on Gail and Me: 40 Years of Gail on Coronation Street, a documentary. Despite leaving the sudser after a 6-year stint, Cheryl remained a part of its legacy by making acting contributions every now and then.
In fact, she was working on the ITV soap when she first suffered her first MS attack. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and the health condition forced her to retire from her acting career in 1998. She was only 46 years old at the time. After the news of the actress’ passing came to light ITV issued a statement in her memory.
