Coronation Street fans are stunned by the revelation actress Cherylee Houston recently made about a horrifying experience she had to endure. The star who plays Izzy Armstrong on the ITV drama recently came across some hooligans who subjected her to hurtful verbal abuse on the streets. All because she is wheelchair-bound. However, our reel and real-life heroine did not break down over it and faced it bravely.
Cherylee Houston took to social media to talk about the slur a person shouted at her while she was out on the streets of Manchester, the same area where Coronation Street is filmed. “Just had some delightful ableism shouted at me out of a car window -Coronation Street Cabbage,” the actress called the person out on X.
Furthermore, she added that she isn’t bringing the incident up because she needs sympathy, but because she feels the need to spread some awareness about it. Cherylee rightly pointed out that attitudes towards disabled people have gone backward in recent years. Many fans came out in support and agreed with her sentiment.
“It feels like as a society we make a few steps forward and then take many steps back. How disappointing,” one fan commented. Meanwhile, another pointed out that it’s not just with a disability, but people have gone backward with everything – racism, ableism, homophobia, and transphobia.
“The respect for disabled people feels very thin on the ground right now. I’m sorry they chose to abuse you. Thank you for speaking out and I hope you are ok,” a fan applauded her for bravely taking a stand for herself. Later, Cherylee also discussed the topic with Michelle Dignan on BBC Radio Manchester.
