Emrhys Cooper revealed his personal link to the cult plot. The actor is known for playing Rowan Cunliffe, the leader of the creepy Altovalent Institute. The character has been manipulating Leanne Battersby on screen. It turns out that Emrhys has firsthand experience with a real cult.
He revealed, “My parents did wind up in a cult. It was actually kind of a wellness, fitness, more of a spiritual cult.” According to the soap star, as they became more deeply involved and contributed more money, the nature of the group turned darker. Emrhys shared that his upbringing in Totnes exposed him to many individuals similar to the character.

Reflecting on his childhood, he mentioned that the town was known for its new-age community and attracted various gurus and holistic practitioners. As he matured, he began to comprehend the potential risks associated with such ‘charismatic figures.’ He suggested that bad advice from this cult resulted in his mother’s health problems.
The Corrie star opened up that his mother’s health suffered greatly due to a holistic doctor prescribing her to stop taking her high blood pressure medication. This led to a heart attack. He mentioned that four years ago, she suffered a severe stroke that left her paralysed and in a nursing home.
Actor’s Parents Escaped The ‘Cult’
Emrhys shared that both his parents eventually left behind the alternative ‘hippie’ lifestyle. He explained that the cult attempted to divide his parents through somewhat sexual exercises involving others. His father became uneasy as he was forced to touch a woman.
Eventually, they realised that this exercise program wasn’t as beneficial as it seemed. However, they continue to explore various alternative lifestyles. The star concluded his words by saying, “And they are intelligent people; they’re just, unfortunately, very open-hearted and many times they’ve been taken advantage of.”
