Coronation Street fans are used to seeing David Platt in hot water, but this time it was Jack P Shepherd himself who found flashing blue lights in his rear-view mirror. The actor has revealed that police recently pulled him over after work and while things could have taken a turn for the worse, he had a very down-to-earth explanation ready.

Jack P Shepherd Reveals Why Police Stopped Him

Coronation Street favourite Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt, shared the story on his podcast On the Sofa with co-hosts Colson Smith and Ben Price.

While David has faced his fair share of police trouble on screen, Shepherd admitted it’s far less common in real life. He explained that he had just finished work and was driving home during rush hour when he noticed something unusual.

“I finished work, on my way home… He comes up behind me, lights come on, it’s traffic, it’s 6 o’clock at night, it’s sort of busy,” he said. Naturally, he wondered what was happening as the police officer pulled up alongside his car.

Shepherd described how he rolled down his window as the officer approached. The policeman told him to take it easy and drive more carefully because he was “a bit all over the road.” At that moment, Shepherd admitted he knew exactly what the officer meant and he had a reason ready.

The Pothole Problem That Saved Him

Rather than panic, Shepherd explained that the real culprit wasn’t reckless driving; it was potholes. He told the officer, “Yeah, mate, d’you know why? It’s the potholes,” which immediately made the policeman laugh.

Shepherd pointed out that the officer had literally just driven down the same stretch of road and would know how bad it was. He said you simply can’t stay in one lane without swerving because you have to dodge the craters in the tarmac.

As they chatted at the traffic lights, the officer admitted he had a point. The policeman even glanced at Shepherd’s car and commented that he wouldn’t want to burst one of those tyres. Shepherd replied that he had already popped three tyres on that very road in the same car over the years. “Three. In my lifetime. In the same car. Three,” he stressed. The officer told him he wasn’t surprised by that number at all, though he confessed he initially thought the actor was “pissed.” It was only then that the officer realised he recognised Shepherd from television.

Soap fans know that David Platt rarely escapes drama in Weatherfield, especially when it comes to clashes with authority. That’s why this real-life moment amused listeners so much; in another universe, Kit Green might not have let him off so easily. Still, Shepherd handled the situation calmly and explained himself clearly. Instead of facing a fine, he shared a laugh with the officer and gave Coronation Street viewers yet another off-screen story to enjoy.
