In a twist as gripping as any storyline on Coronation Street, Jack James Ryan, known for playing Jacob Hay, has opened up about a hidden chapter of his life. Jack, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer at just 19, has recently thrown himself into Movember’s annual campaign to raise awareness for men’s health. But what’s behind this passion, and what message does he hope fans of the show will take away?
A Battle Only Few Knew: “The Isolation Was Overwhelming”
At an age when most are just beginning their adult lives, Jack found himself facing something entirely different – a cancer diagnosis. “I remember the feeling of isolation, fear, and vulnerability that came with my diagnosis,” he shares.
He also emphasized on how alone he felt, struggling to find others who understood what he was going through. Jack’s words hit home for many of his fans, as he candidly shares how this early ordeal shaped his outlook on life and the importance of being open about men’s health struggles.
With Movember approaching, Jack saw a chance to use his platform to do more than just entertain – to make a difference. “As someone who’s personally been through the challenge of testicular cancer, I can’t stress enough how important it is to openly talk about men’s health,” he says. His hope? That by speaking out, more men will feel empowered to seek help and support each other.

Growing a ‘Tache and a Movement: Why Jack Is All In
Alongside a host of British personalities, including Olympian Max Whitlock and Ted Lasso’s Kola Bokinni, Jack has embraced the famous Movember mustache. But as he points out, it’s not just about growing facial hair.
“If a ‘tache isn’t for you, there are plenty of other ways to get involved,” he explains. Movember is calling for supporters to move 60km, host events, or tackle personal challenges – anything to raise funds and bring men’s health issues into the open.
“We need to unite our global community,” says Anne-Cecile Berthier, UK and Europe Director of Movember, and Jack couldn’t agree more. “It’s about getting everyone to answer the call,” he says. Jack’s involvement shows that no matter who you are, you can make a difference in the fight against men’s health issues.
Jacob Hay’s Bittersweet Farewell – Will He Ever Return?
For Corrie fans, Jack’s departure as Jacob Hay was a bittersweet moment. Jacob, who had come full circle from a troublemaker to a beloved character, left under difficult circumstances. Fans watched as Jacob, forced to leave by his gangster dad, Damon, let Amy and the others believe he was back to his old tricks, dealing drugs. “It’s crushing,” Jack says of Jacob’s exit. “They think he’s been lying the whole time. It’s heartbreaking, not just for Jacob but for me as well.”
As he recalls, leaving was no easy decision. “It was tough because I love the character,” Jack admits. “But I felt like I’d done what I came to do.” His parting words? “Hashtag Justice for Jacob!” – a rallying cry for fans who hoped for a better ending for the character. But with soaps, who knows what twists lie ahead?
