Actress Sue Cleaver is an absolute soap legend. Especially for her role as the tenacious Eileen Grimshaw on Coronation Street. A role that she has flawlessly portrayed for 25 years. She debuted on the ITV sudser back in 2000 and now, two and a half decades later, she is all set to bid goodbye. The reports suggest that she will be making her exit in the coming months. When she first came on to the soap, she started working at a taxi firm StreetCars, to be able to provide for her children.
Later, she became part of some of the most iconic Coronation Street storylines. Including Todd coming out of the closet as Corrie’s first-ever gay character. In more recent years, she was part of a dramatic storyline where she unknowingly married a serial killer, Pat Phelan.
However, the marriage did not last long as he fell to his death during a dramatic confrontation on a cliffside. Interestingly, another very iconic storyline on the soap has been about her rivalry with Gail Platt. A character that recently exited the soap. So, it pinches a little, having to lose Eileen so soon after.
We hate to see Sue Cleaver leave as Eileen, but it is a decision she has made of her own free will. The iconic actress feels that it is time for her to move on from the soap and the role. “The door is still firmly open, but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures, and live fearlessly,” she asserted. In a recent chat with Yours Magazine, Sue stated that she is very happy in her current reality. She added that the recent decade has been the best phase of her life.
She now wants to be brave and recreate herself by trying newer experiences. It is also something that she is encouraging other “empty nesters” to do. Sue pointed out that most people lack courage. But insists that courage is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. The icon suggests that people should just get on the internet and research things that they want to try and make a call to know more. She explains that these things don’t have to be big challenges. Just things that bring joy.
We must admit that that’s some very wise advice! Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street updates on how Eileen’s exit plays out. Meanwhile, share your thoughts in the comments below!
