Coronation Street fans still remember Ashley Peacock as one of Weatherfield’s kindest souls, so when talk of soap comebacks started circulating again, many hoped his return might be next. Now, after years away from the cobbles, actor Steven Arnold has finally addressed the possibility, and his answer may disappoint longtime viewers.

Steven Arnold Reflects on Ashley’s Life after Coronation Street

Steven Arnold portrayed Ashley Peacock for 15 years on Coronation Street, becoming one of the show’s most loved characters. As Weatherfield’s dependable butcher, Ashley built strong emotional connections with viewers, especially through his two major love stories.

His relationship with Maxine ended in tragedy when she was murdered by serial killer Richard Hillman in 2003. Later, Ashley found happiness again with Claire, whom he married in a memorable Christmas Day episode in 2004. These storylines helped secure his place as a firm fan favourite.

Ashley’s journey came to a heartbreaking end during the 50th anniversary tram crash in 2010, when he was crushed by a falling beam. After leaving the soap, Arnold explored a range of acting opportunities across theatre, television, and film, while also working as an acting coach.

Looking back, Arnold shared that one of his most meaningful experiences on the show was working alongside John Savident, who played his on-screen father Fred Elliot. He said working with him shaped the way he performs even today. He added that when he teaches acting in colleges, he can still hear Savident’s guidance coming through his own words.

A Return Isn’t On the Cards?

Although Arnold no longer keeps in regular contact with the entire cast, some bonds remain strong. He revealed that Julia Haworth, who played his on-screen wife Claire, often attends his performances and brings her children along. Other members of the Corrie team also show up from time to time, proving that those connections have not faded.

Still, despite recent trends of soaps bringing characters back from the dead, Arnold has ruled out a return. Shows like EastEnders and Emmerdale have revived characters such as Cindy Beale, Roxy Mitchell, and Graham Foster, which sparked speculation among fans about Ashley’s possible comeback.

CS/ Ashley talks about his decision

Arnold made his position clear when he said he would not return. He explained that Ashley’s death was final and difficult to reverse. He recalled that Ashley was crushed by a beam hanging on chains during the tram disaster. And after filming those scenes, he attended his farewell party, which marked a clear end to his time on the show.

Even so, Arnold admitted that Ashley still holds a special place in his heart. He said he sometimes misses playing him. But he also believes that parts of Ashley continue to live on in the characters he portrays today. According to him, when you play a role for that long, it becomes part of you, and you naturally carry those traits into future performances.
