One of the show’s most recognizable faces is already looking to his next adventure—and it could just see him leave Weatherfield behind for a completely new beat. Although his last Coronation Street scenes have yet to be broadcast, this former soap favourite has confirmed he’s already put his hat in the ring for a big new TV part.
Colson Smith Opens Up About Life After Corrie
Colson Smith, who has portrayed Craig Tinker since 2011, recently revealed that he‘s auditioned for a part in the BBC‘s popular crime dramedy Ludwig. While Craig remains on the cobbles at least for the time being, Colson did confirm that his last scenes will be filmed later this year.
The 26-year-old, also causing a stir on Celebrity Big Brother, spokeabout the audition on an episode of his podcast On The Sofa, which he co-hosts with fellow Coronation Street actors Ben Price and Jack P. Shepherd.
He explained that he had sent in a self-tape for the role of a police officer—a part he said felt strangely familiar.
He described the character brief as sounding much like Craig: cringey, likeable, and awkward. “It was grating to read through,” Colson said, observing how much it reminded him of the character he had just finished playing.
Why Colson Thinks He Won‘t Get the Part
Despite enjoying the process, Colson admitted he didn’t expect to land the job. He shared that he hadn’t heard back yet and doubted his chances. He said the role felt “too similar” to Craig Tinker and that it’s always tough for him to play a copper without feeling typecast.
Nevertheless, the experience was important to him. “It was just nice to do my first tape,” he said. “It was for a relatively big production, so it was a nice experience to get out and do it.” Colson also said that he entered it understanding that he probably wouldn‘t be selected. But even with low expectations, he enjoyed the chance to do something different.
A Big Year of Goodbyes on Coronation Street
Colson‘s departure is one of a number that have shaken Coronation Street in recent months. Viewers have already bid farewell to characters such as Mason Radcliffe and Debbie Webster. They were both written out by the bosses.
At the same time, Sue Cleaver and Charlotte Jordan, decided to leave of their own accord. These departures came after the historic exit of Helen Worth, who played Gail Platt for an astounding 50 years.
Colson initially joined Corrie at the age of 13 and has guided Craig through some of the soap‘s strongest storylines. Everything from school bullying and fighting OCD to his path into policing. His extended stint and emotional journeys made him a favourite among fans. Tune in to Soap Opera Daily for all the latest Corrie cast news, departures, and behind-the-scenes gossip.
