Coronation Street fans have received some welcome news about one of Weatherfield’s familiar faces. Tony Maudsley, who plays undertaker George Shuttleworth on the ITV soap, has confirmed that he has signed a new contract to remain on the show. The actor shared the update with fans online and viewers were quick to celebrate the announcement, calling the news brilliant and saying the show would not be the same without him.
Tony Maudsley Confirms New Contract On Coronation Street
Tony Maudsley revealed on Sunday, March 1, that he has signed a new deal to continue playing George Shuttleworth for another year on Coronation Street. The actor shared the news on social media while raising a glass of fizz to mark the moment.
Posting a photo of himself looking smart in a shirt and suit jacket, Tony looked delighted as he celebrated the new agreement. He told fans, “New contract? Cheers Corrie, don’t mind if I do. (I bit their hand off!) Can’t wait to see what’s around the corner for George,” before joking that the character will probably encounter “more corpses.”

Tony first appeared on Coronation Street in 2020 as George Shuttleworth. The storyline revealed that George was the son of Archie Shuttleworth, the local undertaker who previously ran Shuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street.
After Archie passed away, George took over the business and continued the family trade in Weatherfield. The character’s family connections grew further when his sister Glenda Shuttleworth later arrived on the cobbles.
George’s Storyline Continues In Weatherfield
The contract announcement arrives at an interesting time for George’s storyline on the show. Recently, George was left heartbroken when his partner Eileen Grimshaw, ended their relationship before leaving Weatherfield for Thailand.
Soon after that split, Christina Boyd returned to the cobbles. The character came back to Weatherfield last summer and was last seen earlier in 2025 after being double crossed by her daughter Daisy Midgeley.

George and Christina soon grew closer and their connection quickly turned romantic. The relationship has been warmly received by viewers. It is because Tony Maudsley and Amy Robbins have known each other for around 25 years. The actors have already joked about what a future wedding for their characters might look like. Tony told Inside Soap that they have even imagined the ceremony, explaining that he would love something to go wrong such as a problem with the wedding car that forces Christina to arrive in a hearse.
After Tony announced his new contract, fans quickly responded with supportive messages and excitement about seeing more of George on screen. Many viewers made it clear they were thrilled that the character would remain part of the show. For now, Tony Maudsley is staying on Coronation Street for another year, and viewers clearly think that is brilliant news. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers.
