Dee-Dee Bailey is attempting to remain at arm’s length, but this coming week on Coronation Street, it becomes increasingly difficult to do so. A gesture of support for her brother James becomes something much deeper, and it may change everything in the Bailey family.
Stepping In, But Failing to Step Back
James Bailey is not sleeping much lately, courtesy of baby Laila. And so when Dee-Dee overhears him muttering that he’s tired, she steps up to relieve him and give him a break. But what begins as a friendly gesture soon ignites deeper emotions. As she spends more time with Laila, Dee-Dee can’t help but smile, and the connection she thought she’d shelved begins sneaking back in.
Later, a letter comes confirming Laila’s due for her jabs. When Michael informs Dee-Dee that James has left for Leeds and won’t be able to bring her back, she realizes it’s up to her. She takes a deep breath and takes Laila to the appointment herself, something she tells Michael was more emotionally taxing than she anticipated.
Dee-Dee Confronts Her Brother in Coronation Street
Previously in the week, Daniel Osbourne had urged Dee-Dee to go on student radio with Amy Barlow and discuss Black women’s maternity experience. But after the appointment, Dee-Dee admits she is not tough enough for it. It’s obvious the feelings around her experience, and her continuing relationship with Laila, are rising quickly.
Things reach a boiling point when James comes back. As the siblings discuss the latest news, things become tense. What began as a discussion easily escalates into a disagreement over what’s in the baby’s best interests. It’s now apparent that this arrangement may no longer be going as they thought.
The Baileys have succeeded in keeping things together up until now, but this could be the breaking point. Dee-Dee’s emotional attachment to Laila continues to draw her in even when she is trying to do the right thing. Meanwhile, James does his best to maintain stability, but tensions are apparently escalating. Can this family ever find a way to move forward, or are they bound for a breakdown?
