Things don’t remain peaceful on the Coronation Street for long—and this week, an old Weatherfield favourite makes way for a newcomer to provide them with a new start. And it’s not just anyone—she’s a former foster child who is very much in need of guidance.
Jenny’s Uncertain Future Slips Away
Having spent a lifetime in the run-up behind the bar, Jenny Connor is bracing herself for the end of her time as landlady of the Rovers Return. Officially, the sale of the pub to new management is in full swing, and Carla Connor has taken possession of the deeds. Although Jenny still holds court, the writing’s on the wall—her days as landlady are counting down.
With time running out, Jenny starts thinking about what she can do next. She braves an approach to Brian Packham at The Kabin to inquire if he’s hiring. Brian himself is quick to point out that they’re fully staffed—and that Rita Tanner is still the backbone of the newsagents. But Rita hears her and surprises everyone with a softly but firmly stated announcement.
Rita Decides to Take a Step Back in Coronation Street
Rita kindly warns Brian not to talk too fast. She says that, being an older woman, she’s hoping to slow down a bit. She suggests that there might be a vacancy opening up soon that Jenny could take. Brian, shocked, declares that Rita is “a vital cog in the machine,” but she teasingly warns: “Well, this old cog is going to wear out if I don’t ease up. So think on!
Following Rita taking to heart what was said by her, Brian opts to provide a job to Jenny at The Kabin. It is not exactly a goodbye for Rita, but her statement brings about a serious shift in the legendary role within the community.
Viewers of the veteran soap will be aware that Rita has had a connection to The Kabin since 1973. She used to own the store herself before parting with the remaining share in 2009, selling to Norris Cole, then remaining there as an employee. Brian purchased ownership in 2019.
This development doesn’t only mean a new career for Jenny. It might also give new life to The Kabin, which has become less of a staple in recent years. With Jenny behind the till, there might even be hope that the store could resume its old place as the hub of Weatherfield existence.
And while Rita’s slowing down, it’s apparent she’s not walking away entirely. Her counsel, wit, and trademark sass will still be present—just perhaps with an extra few tea breaks.
