Coronation Street viewers settled in for what they thought would be another emotional chapter for David and Shona Platt but the moment the latest episode began, many fans quickly realised something felt very different. Instead of the usual Weatherfield rhythm, ITV surprised everyone with a completely new style, leaving the audience curious… and soon, very confused.
Coronation Street Fans Were Confused
David and Shona have already been going through a tough time. David’s tense run-in with Kit Green recently ended with him being arrested, which meant he couldn’t join Shona at a major hospital appointment about their unborn baby.
By the time he finally arrived, the atmosphere was already heavy. The couple learned during the scan that doctors had spotted a mass on the baby’s neck, and Shona was referred to a consultant straight away.
Understandably, both of them struggled to take in the news, and the show began setting up a special two-hander episode to explore what they were going through internally.
Even though David and Shona weren’t on the same page at first, they slowly started opening up about their fears as they prepared for the next hospital visit. By the time they arrived together, they had managed to reconnect, ready to face whatever the doctors told them next.
Fans Aren’t Having The New Format
But once the episode aired, the storyline wasn’t the only thing grabbing attention. Instead, the chatter online quickly shifted to the bold stylistic choice ITV introduced. Rather than following scenes in the usual way, the episode unfolded with David’s and Shona’s thoughts narrated over the action.
ITV clearly intended this to give viewers a look inside their emotions but plenty of fans felt the experiment didn’t land.
One viewer said they found the episode impossible to enjoy and hoped this new approach wouldn’t become a regular thing. Someone commented that they found the style “really tiring,” while another said they didn’t want to hear anyone’s inner thoughts. A few fans wondered if the whole episode would follow this format, sounding genuinely exhausted at the idea. Some comments were more blunt. Many also pointed out that Shona didn’t seem like the kind of character who’d have her thoughts narrated over scenes.
Although the episode tried to show how differently each of them coped, the couple ultimately leaned on each other. Corrie is no stranger to experimenting. But this particular stylistic twist sparked one of the biggest debates among viewers in months. Whether the soap will return to this narrated style again isn’t clear. But for now, fans are hoping it was a one-off. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for every Coronation Street spoiler and update.
