Kym Marsh first stepped onto the famous cobbles of Coronation Street in 2006. Originally cast for just four episodes, her character, Michelle Connor, quickly became a household name. She remained part of the soap for 13 years. Even when she left, she left an indelible mark on the show.
From Barmaid to Soap Icon
Michelle’s time in Weatherfield was not smooth at all. She had to endure heartbreak after heartbreak—starting with the revelation that her fiancé, Sonny Dhillon, was secretly involved with Sean Tully.
Her world was turned upside down when she discovered that his son, Ryan Conner, had been swapped at birth in a devastating hospital mix-up. In fact, the emotional toll of reconnecting with her biological son, Ali Neeson, haunted her for years.
Even her love life wasn’t any easier. Michelle’s rollercoaster romance with Steve McDonald had fans hooked as much as her friendship with Carla Connor. But it was a tragic stillbirth storyline that made her place in soap history. Losing baby Ruairi was one of Corrie’s most heartbreaking moments. What made it even worse was that Michelle later discovered that Steve had fathered Leanne Battersby’s son, Oliver.
Kym Commented On Her Role
Michelle also had to go through life-threatening encounters when she was terrorised by her ex-boyfriend and stalker, Will Chatterton. Later, she also survived being shot by Pat Phelan at her own wedding. She even found herself tangled in a deadly plot involving the gangster Ronan Truman. She has always been a part of major storylines in the soap, and during her exit in 2019, fans were really sad.
After our exit, Kym Marsh has built an impressive career outside of the soap. She became a presenter on BBC Morning Live, danced her way through Strictly Come Dancing, and starred in stage productions. However, despite her busy schedule, she hasn’t ruled out a return to the cobbles. Speaking to the Sun, she admitted that the soap still holds a place in her heart.
She said, “I’d never say never to going back as I absolutely adore Coronation Street, and I had some of my best years there. I learned so much from that show, and I made so many friends. But I left to pursue other projects, and I’m still in the middle of doing that, but maybe one day!” Whether she will return or not is still a debate—and only the upcoming Coronation Street spoilers can reveal the rest.
