Fans of Coronation Street have started questioning Theo’s storyline, and the debate is getting louder. At first, his journey looked like it would focus on his struggle with identity and acceptance. But now, with his behaviour turning darker and more disturbing, viewers are wondering if the writers always planned this version of Theo or if something changed along the way.

Did Coronation Street Always Plan Theo’s Darker Side?

In the beginning, Theo did not come across as a full villain. He seemed like a man dealing with internal conflict. His struggles with his sexuality, his broken relationship with Danielle, and his growing bond with Todd made viewers think the story would focus on acceptance and healing.

However, some fans now believe the writers planned the darker turn from the start. They point out that Theo showed signs of anger and control early on. He blamed Todd for his problems, reacted strongly in emotional situations, and often shifted responsibility onto others.

One viewer explained that abuse does not begin in obvious ways. It builds slowly with small actions that seem forgivable at first, and then it becomes something much worse.

There is also information from an Inside Soap podcast where actor James Cartwright said he knew from the beginning that Theo would become Todd’s boyfriend and that the storyline would involve domestic violence. This has led many fans to believe that the slow progression was intentional and carefully written.

Did the Storyline Change Midway?

Not everyone agrees that this was always the plan. Some viewers feel the story took a different direction after certain plot points, especially around the time the Noah storyline ended. Earlier, Theo’s aggression seemed connected to his fear of being exposed and his struggle to accept himself. He avoided places like gay bars, reacted badly to drag events, and did not want people to know about his sexuality.

Later, the story introduced new elements that confused some fans. It was revealed that Theo may have had an abusive past with other partners. There were also hints that he could have been abusive to Danielle. At the same time, he started acting more comfortable in spaces he once avoided, which made his character feel inconsistent to some viewers.

One fan summed it up by saying that Theo first seemed like someone shaped by internalised homophobia, but now he comes across as someone who enjoys control and abuse. Another viewer said they originally saw him as a man whose life fell apart after coming out, blaming Todd for everything, but the later twist that he had been living a double life made the character feel very different.

The audience remains split on this storyline. Some believe the writers have done a strong job by slowly revealing Theo’s true nature. They feel the show made viewers sympathise with him first. Stay tuned to Soap Opera Daily for more Coronation Street spoilers.
