Kojo Asare and Harry Mitchell were under the control of Okie and Ravi for months. However, now they have finally managed to escape from their exploitation. After escaping, they went to the police. They both thought that they could live their normal lives like before. However, Kojo and Harry come face-to-face with Okie again.
Elsewhere, when Okie saw them, he got a bit aggressive. He was trying to attack Kojo for going to the police. However, Harry jumped in to save his friend. The circumstances changed, and he unintentionally stabbed Okie. They tried to save him. Nevertheless, the BBC soap has confirmed that he is going to die from his wounds.
The gripping story has brought to the fore the risks of exploitation and the tough lives of those who are defenceless. It is the takeover of the home of a lonely person by a group of criminals to carry out illegal activities. The show’s creators were careful and respectful in depicting this issue and gave it a lot of heartfelt emotion.
The BBC Soap Sheds Light On Hidden Exploitation
Executive producer Ben Wadey spoke about the importance of telling Kojo’s story with care. He said, “Cuckooing is a form of exploitation that too often goes unseen and hasn’t featured on EastEnders before.” Through Kojo’s experience, we hope to have shed light on how easily vulnerable people can be manipulated and isolated, something that can happen in any community, but feels particularly resonant in a city like London, where people live side by side and yet can still slip through the cracks.
Helen Ball, CEO of Causeway, described cuckooing as “Criminals exploit vulnerable people by taking over their homes in a cruel and dehumanising way.” She praised the soap for its dedication to showing the human cost behind such crimes.
Dr Judith Brown from the National Autistic Society also shared her thoughts. “We hope this storyline encourages autistic people or parents of autistic children to understand what abuse and exploitation can look like,” she said.
