Emmerdale missed the opportunity to grab the best soap award at the BAFTA Awards this year. The show withdrew its name as one of the writers committed a serious crime. So its rival soap grabbed the award this year. Keep scrolling to know more about the event.
Emmerdale Missed The Opportunity Due To Martin!
The BAFTA Awards ceremony was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London. It was aired on television on Sunday. EastEnders won the award for the best soap. The soap’s executive producer, Chris Clenshaw, accepted the award along with his cast members. The other shows nominated in the similar category were ITV’s soap, Coronation Street and BBC’s soap, Casualty. Chris expressed his gratitude to the soap’s viewers, as without them, the show wouldn’t have been running for forty years.
Meanwhile, Emmerdale fans know that the soap withdrew its name from the nominations as one of its top writers, Martin Fustes, assaulted his partner. They felt it inappropriate to win the award because of the domestic abuse storylines written by someone who had done the heinous acts himself in real life. The writer admitted his crime at Hull Crown Court was attacking his girlfriend. After that, he was no longer a part of the soap.
Many Shows Won The Other BAFTA Awards!
Though they had a high chance of winning the award, they withdrew it due to Martin Fustes. However, this drastic step disturbed the judging process for the category, and BAFTA contacted the people who were voting.
Meanwhile, Emmerdale was praised for its domestic abuse storyline involving Belle and Tom. Belle’s husband, Tom, abused her and mentally tortured her by keeping a check on her actions, which led to their divorce. The irony was that Martin Fustes had written these assault storylines.
Elsewhere, the series which won other awards was The Jury: Murder Trial. Meanwhile, The Traitors was also nominated. Ariyon Bakare won the best supporting actor award for the drama, Mr. Loverman. In the BBC series, he played the role of Morris De LA Roche. Meanwhile, BBC grabbed the award for its sports coverage in the Paris 2024 Olympics and live coverage of the Glastonbury festival.
Also, the best specialist factual was given to BBC Two’s Atomic People. In the comedy category, Welsh comedian Ruth Jones grabbed the award for Gavin and Stacey: The Finale. The comedian expressed her gratitude to her friend, James Corden. Meanwhile, though Emmerdale had to withdraw its name, it will grab attention again in the next BAFTA Awards.
