Patrick Actor Opens Up About His Struggles
Soap legend Rudolph Walker has had a difficult life and the actor who portrays Yolande’s husband, Patrick on EastEnders spent two years broke and homeless – with ‘only a car to his name.’ The actor, who arrived in Albert Square in 2001, spoke about how he was devastated at his unfortunate situation after his divorce. It looks like the 84-year-old got tangled up in the legal costs of his second divorce with Dounne Alexander in 1998.
Even while he was on one of the BBC’s biggest shows, Rudolph lived out of a suitcase and relied on favours from friends to put a roof over his head. All this time, his colleagues were unaware of his struggles. The legal fees during the divorce left him penniless and things got so worse when he would hope for late-night filming sessions thinking that the bosses will put him up in a hotel near the set.
While discussing the same with The Mirror, Walker said, “It was painful. It was extremely difficult. I just didn’t have any financial means. I was literally starting from scratch again in my 70s, with nowhere to live. It was a time of great pain and loneliness.” He also mentioned how, on some days, he would pull up at the side of the road – just to cry. As per Rudolph, he started living a ‘double life’ that caused him a great deal of pain.
